Preparing for the inevitable…

Alpine Heating and Cooling • Oct 29, 2019

Well… we had a nice summer and fall is beautiful but…. If you live in Ohio you know what is lurking right around the corner so we’re not even going to say the word 😊 We still have some time left to enjoy the beauty of Fall and the refreshingly cool temps however but this is also a good time to begin preparing.

Furnace maintenance in the fall is crucial to ensure your system is operating correctly for the upcoming season (we’re really not saying it 😊). To get the most from your heating and cooling system, remember to perform these tasks this autumn.

1. Clean your vents

Dust and other debris will build up in your Furnace & Vents during the summer. When Autumn hits we recommend that customers check for any blockages and clean all their vents. This alone can save up to 10% in heating bills this winter.

2. Clean Your Outdoor Units

While the leaves falling are beautiful, but they can also have a very negative impact on your HVAC units. A lot of customers will make sure to remove the leaves from their yard but disregard their HVAC units. These leaves, along with dust, dirt and twigs get into your outdoor unit and can cause issues down the road.

3. Clogging in the Condensate Drain Line

A clog in the condensate drain line can spell bad news your heating and cooling systems. Regular maintenance can usually prevent this by pouring a solution of     bleach and water through the line to help prevent clogs from forming. If you are not confident in doing this, please contact us and we would be glad to come out and assist.

4. Scheduled Maintenance

The routine maintenance listed above will go a long way towards the health and efficiency of your Furnace and Air Conditioning systems. Most manufactures  recommend Bi-Annual service maintenance on units as well. We offer multiple different levels of service agreements that are very affordable and offer a “set it and forget” solution to your heating and cooling maintenance.

Controlling allergies can be a challenging task, but HVAC systems can help to reduce the concentration of allergens in your home. Regular maintenance and proper use of your HVAC system can help to ensure that your indoor air quality is healthy and allergy-free. If you are struggling with allergies, consider contacting an HVAC professional to discuss the options available to you. A healthy and clean home starts with a well-maintained HVAC system. How HVAC Systems Can Control Allergies: Filters: The first line of defense against allergens in your HVAC system is the filter. The filter helps to capture and remove airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, and pet dander. It is essential to choose the right filter for your HVAC system as there are various options available in the market. High-efficiency filters, such as HEPA filters, can trap up to 99.97% of airborne particles, including allergens. 2.Air Purifiers: If you have severe allergies, you may want to consider installing an air purifier in your HVAC system. Air purifiers use advanced filtration technology to capture even the smallest allergen particles, leaving the air in your home cleaner and healthier to breathe. 3.Humidity Control: High humidity levels can encourage the growth of mold and mildew, which can trigger allergies. HVAC systems can help control the humidity levels in your home, reducing the risk of mold growth and helping to keep your indoor air quality healthy. 4.Ventilation: Proper ventilation is crucial for controlling indoor allergens. HVAC systems help to circulate fresh air into your home, reducing the concentration of allergens in the air. Once the weather warms up, you’ll rely on the air conditioner to maintain a comfortable and healthy living environment. Thus, before switching the HVAC system from heating to cooling, you must ensure everything is in good working order. Properly preparing the equipment for seasonal changes will help ensure peak efficiency and prevent inconvenient breakdowns, so here are some steps to take to get ready for spring. Spring HVAC Maintenance Checklist 1. Inspect the Outdoor Unit Before turning on the air conditioner for the first time this year, you’ll want to check the outdoor compressor unit for any signs of winter damage. The area around it should also be cleared of all debris and vegetation, as these could get sucked inside and restrict airflow. The coils will also need to be cleaned, and the drain line inspected for clogs. 2. Replace Filters After a long winter, the HVAC filter is likely full of dirt, dust, pet dander, and other allergens. Once it becomes packed with particles, the unit will struggle to distribute cool air through the home, raising your utility bills as well. A clogged filter also makes it easier for allergens to circulate throughout the home. As a result, the air your family breathes in will be more contaminated. Putting in a clean filter in spring will help with efficiency and indoor air quality. For optimal HVAC performance, continue this practice every two or three months. 3. Check Vents Dirty, obstructed, or closed vents can result in uneven cooling. This means there will be areas of the home that cannot reach your desired temperature. Walk from room to room to ensure the vents are clear of any furniture, curtains, or clutter that could be blocking them. You should also check that they’re all open and use a vacuum hose to clean them out. 4. Test the Cooling Function If there are any problems with the air conditioner, you should identify them before summer arrives. Therefore, test the system’s functionality to catch any underlying issues. To accomplish this, turn the unit on and let it run through a cycle to see if you notice any strange noises or smells. If there’s a problem, have a professional address it quickly before the temperatures rise. If you’re in need of service or a new system, contact Alpine Heating & Cooling ! What Habits Negatively Impact an HVAC System? 1. Adjusting the Thermostat Too Often Constantly adjusting the thermostat temperature puts extra stress on the HVAC system. This practice causes the device to turn on and off more frequently, increasing the wear and tear on components. The system will need more frequent repairs as a result. Starting up and stopping also uses more energy, leading to higher utility bills. Fortunately, keeping the thermostat setting consistent will help avoid increased costs and wear. Better yet, invest in a smart or programmable thermostat to make adjustments. 2. Forgetting to Change the Filter An HVAC filter cleans warmed or cooled air by trapping particles that can cause allergic reactions and respiratory symptoms, including dust, pollen, dirt, pet dander, and mold. When this component is clogged, the system has to work harder to distribute air. The unit will operate for longer periods to reach the thermostat setting, escalating energy usage. Changing the filter regularly—around every three months—maintains the system's energy efficiency and ensures everyone breathes clean, healthy air. 3. Skipping Routine Maintenance Many modern HVAC systems have a life span of up to 25 years. However, yours won't last that long if you skip routine maintenance. That's because the unit has many sensitive, moving parts that need an annual inspection. A technician can catch small issues before they worsen and require expensive repairs. Sticking to the recommended schedule helps you avoid the hassle and high cost of replacing the system. How to Eliminate Home Temperature Imbalances For you to enjoy the greatest efficiency and comfort, the HVAC system should distribute a steady flow of air throughout your living space. However, in two-story homes, it’s common to have significant temperature differences between the upper and lower levels. Inconsistent heating and cooling can occur for various reasons, but fortunately, you can take steps to solve this problem. Here’s how to ensure both floors are warmed evenly during the winter. 1. Change the Fan Setting Aside from the “on” and “off” options, the thermostat generally has an auto setting. In this position, the HVAC fan will continue cycling as needed to reach your desired temperature. Switching the device from the “auto” setting to “on” often fixes irregular air distribution. This will keep the unit running consistently so the fan can circulate air even after the heating or cooling cycle is complete, helping to even out temperatures on the first and second floors. 2. Check for Duct Leaks Ductwork supplies heated or cooled air to different areas of your home. Yet, air will leak out before arriving at its intended destination if there are cracks, holes, or other damage to the conduits. When warm air escapes from the system, there won’t be enough left to reach the upstairs and downstairs. If you notice uneven heating, have a professional HVAC contractor inspect the ducts and determine if they need sealing. 3. Add Attic Insulation Inadequate insulation can often cause hot and cold spots to develop around the house. In winter, a properly insulated attic will prevent heat flow from escaping while keeping the chilly outside air from getting inside. Visible floor joists in the attic will help determine if you lack enough material. In this case, adding more insulation will help equalize the temperatures. 4. Consider a Zoned System A challenge of heating and cooling a two-story home is that the thermostat will often sense only the temperature of the floor it’s installed on. You can address this issue with a zoned HVAC system. This approach splits the house into sections, each with its own thermostat to give you better control over the temperature settings for separate areas. As a result, you’ll be able to achieve more balanced warmth. If you are in need of service on your current HVAC system please give us a call and we'd be glad to begin the process of evaluating your needs along with your budget and coming up with a plan for your heating , cooling & air quality needs. 330.263.0013 or 330.359.7114 sales@alpinehcservices.com https://www.alpinehcservices.com/contac t
